What age Issac was when Abraham took him to be sacrificed?
Answer:
I have heard two variations, one being he was a young boy with no knowledge of what was about to take place, another that he was a teenager and probably knew he was to be the sacrifice.
A third, and the one I believe is the case…he was 33.
The Bible does not say for sure, but the only reason we believe he is just a boy is because in Sunday school we always had pictures of him at that age.
The truth is…Isaac was a sign a symbol of Christ’s work on Calvary.
- An only son being offered by his loving father
- Jesus carried the wooden cross, Isaac also had wood laid on his back …Genesis 22:6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
- Isaac was to be offered on the top of Mount Moriah, and this would constitute one of several hills around Jerusalem. Many scholars believe the spot was not where the dome of the Rock is today, but instead the exact spot where thousands of years later Jesus very cross would be placed – on Golgotha which is also one of the Mount Moriah peaks. After all, Genesis 22:8 says… And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
God not only provided the lamb then, but also the Lamb thousands of years later that was the fulfillment of all that God had planned…
So, would it not be reasonable to assume Isaac was perhaps the same age as Christ when he walked up his mountain of sacrifice…33
