I looked up what these items are worth today. Here is a current price…
Gold – about $500 per ounce
1 Kg (2.2 lbs) frankincense – $156
1 Kg (2.2 lbs) myrrh – $67
We do not know the weight of each of the items given, but assuming a good mix of all three it was probably several thousand dollars, by today’s money standards.
I once heard someone say…it was no doubt the EXACT amount of money it was going to take for them to escape to Egypt when Herod wanted to kill the young infant Jesus, until Joseph could find work and again support his family.
I tend to agree with that…God had already provided the way and means that He would provide for His Son during this trying time.
