How do you overcome besetting sin?
Answer:
I will give you 3 steps that are guaranteed to work. Remember, sin is an addiction just like alcoholism or any drug. No matter how long you walk with Christ, giving in to that sin is just like the alcoholic giving into the drink. You cannot take that drink, you cannot go back to that sin because you will fall just as far and feel just as bad as you do when you give into these things.
Here is the 3 step plan:
- James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ****You must understand the first step is to resist that thing. Run from it, don’t think about it,. Don’t give it a minute of your time. It doesn’t mean you won’t be tempted, it does mean you don’t have to dwell on it.
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. *** You must understand that God will give you the victory one day at a time. There is nothing that God will allow to tempt you that you cannot overcome at that instance, and for that day. Tomorrow, God will give you the strength for the next day and so on and so forth.
- Ephesians 6:13-17 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: ****Notice that the Word of God is the Sword is an offensive weapon! All the other armor is for protection so we are not destroyed, but when we get out God’s Word it is like pulling out a sword and taking it to that old devil himself. When you feel most tempted, read the Word of God. Read Psalms, they are great when you are tempted because David wrote most of them on some of his worst days. Many times David was about to give up and give in but then he remembered where his strength came from.
Psalms 121:1-3 [A Song of degrees.] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
God will always take you back when you turn from these things and come to him.
