Answer:
There is a supernatural prayer language we receive when we are baptized by the Holy Spirit, and then there is another “praying in tongues” that is a gift of the Spirit and it is given so that it can be interpreted.
There are so many times we don’t even know what to pray for and our minds work in the natural realm and cannot comprehend all the things going on around us in the spirit world. Perhaps we cannot always understand what we are praying in tongues because we couldn’t possible understand the reasons for the prayers even if we did understand what we were saying. When you are praying in tongues you could be interceding for someone on the other side of the world. One thing I do know, when you pray in tongues the Spirit of God knows exactly what is best for us and intercedes even when we don’t understand. Romans 8:26 Likewise
the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
